QCPW Art Trail artworks

A child asked ‘Where does colour come from?’
So we thought about the activities we could set up for the children to explore this idea.

We did the celery and carnation experiment, used the light box and coloured counters and
prisms, pipette colour mixing, and of course looked at all things rainbows.

We read books like ‘red’, which inspired lots of drawing and discussion. We drew on our
child safety training and talked about how these colours make us feel.

We talked about the colours that make us feel safe and we heard a lot of different ideas,
such as red is the colour of a smile. We decided it was time to do a group rainbow artwork.

We looked at different artists and works of art and pictures of rainbows and, after making a
collage rainbow card for Sam’s birthday, we decided to make a collage rainbow.
We looked at Picasso and his use of shape, and cut some of our own shapes out.

Then we chose different coloured paper and tore it up into little pieces and sorted each
colour into little boxes.

We found a big piece of art card, marked out the size of the frame. Decided which colour
would be first and made a bold arch in red.

The children became excited as we finished each colour and moved onto the next, we
used our colour mixing skills to decide the order.

It takes a lot of patience to glue on all of those tiny bits of paper!

Protecting Children is Everybody’s Business
The Montessori Children’s House has received a grant from Queensland Child
Protection Week (QCPW) to create an Art Trail displaying children’s group work which
illustrates the children’s feelings of safety.
We have been talking to the children about feelings and they told us how colours
make them feel, shared their safe spaces like kindy, animals they care for and people
that make them feel safe. We discussed using different media such as collage,
painting, drawing, sewing and even marble rolling!

We have represented our kindy with pictures of gum leaves as we sing songs about
the Gum Tree Growing on a Hill which is also a home for animals. The children love
caring for our bees and fish. We learn to care for ourselves when we care for others.
We talked about how the different colours make us feel and we heard that red is the
colour of a smile. We had our special visitors come to kindy and they helped the
children make a collage of themselves to add to our group picture.

When the children admired the finished artwork, they were fascinated at how
different the artworks created by each group were.

Would your local business like to display one of the remaining group artworks?

Would you like to join us in committing to play your part in child safety? You can
sign the commitment displayed in the foyer.
